FAQs

The Learning Curve FAQs

1.  What services does The Learning Curve provide?

The Learning Curve is an autism therapy centre in Malaysia focused exclusively on providing Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy for young children aged from 2 to 10 years old. We are not a multidisciplinary or diagnostic centre—our sole expertise lies in delivering high-quality, evidence-based ABA therapy in a one-on-one setting.

Here’s what you can expect from our centre:

  1. One-to-One ABA Therapy by Certified Professionals

All our therapy sessions are conducted individually, ensuring personalized attention.

  2. Customised Intervention Plans

Our team develops individualised therapy programs based on each child's assessment. These plans focus on practical skill development, including communication, self-help, learning readiness, and emotional regulation. Please note: While some children in our care may show progress in areas like speech or social behaviour, we do not offer formal speech therapy, occupational therapy, or sensory integration therapy.

  3. Parent Training & Support

We believe successful intervention doesn’t end at the therapy centre. That’s why we offer parent training sessions to help families understand the principles of ABA, reinforce progress at home, and feel confident in supporting their child’s development across different environments.

  4. Transparent Progress Tracking

    Parents are consistently updated through:

    • Daily written feedback

    • Regular re-evaluations and data reports

    • Scheduled progress reviews with our clinical team

If you’re looking for a trusted early intervention centre that offers structured, measurable, and family-inclusive care, The Learning Curve is here to help.

2. What’s the difference between ST, OT, ABA, and EIP?

These are all different types of therapies that support children with developmental differences.

At The Learning Curve, we only provide Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy.

  • ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis): A structured, science-based therapy that helps children learn skills like communication, self-help, feeding routines, and classroom readiness through positive reinforcement. This is the core of what TLC offers.

  • ST (Speech Therapy): Focuses on helping children with pronunciation, language comprehension, and social use of language. While we don’t offer formal speech therapy, our ABA programs may support the development of functional communication and address speech-related behaviours when relevant.

  • OT (Occupational Therapy): Helps children improve motor skills and sensory processing. This is not part of TLC’s services.

  • EIP (Early Intervention Program) is a general term that can include ABA, ST, OT, and other therapies. TLC’s programs are sometimes referred to as early intervention, but we only offer ABA-based services, not a multidisciplinary team approach.

3. Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?

No diagnosis is required to start therapy at The Learning Curve.

If your child is between 2 and 10 years old and you’ve noticed delays or behavioural concerns, you can begin ABA therapy immediately. No referral or medical paperwork is necessary.

However, if you would like a formal diagnosis (e.g., for school placement or funding purposes), we can guide you to the appropriate medical professionals. Only registered medical practitioners, such as developmental pediatricians or child psychologists can provide official diagnoses in Malaysia.

4.  Does my child need to stop school to attend therapy?

Not necessarily. If your child is still learning valuable skills at school (such as language, play, or routines), it may be beneficial to continue both. However, if school becomes overwhelming or is no longer productive, it may be worth temporarily prioritizing ABA therapy at a reputable autism therapy centre to strengthen foundational skills before returning to group settings.

5.  Does TLC provide referrals or recommend doctors?

Yes, we can recommend qualified professionals such as developmental pediatricians, psychologists, and other specialists for diagnosis or further assessment.

Please note that The Learning Curve is not a medical centre and does not provide any diagnostic services.

6. If my child is in ABA therapy, do they still need speech or occupational therapy?

It depends on your child’s individual needs. Our autism centre in Malaysia is goal-oriented and comprehensive. We support skill-building in communication, attention, school readiness, self-care, and emotional regulation. For many families, this is sufficient.

However, some children may benefit from additional support from certified speech or occupational therapists. If so, we advise a collaborative approach, where each therapist
focuses on different goals to prevent confusion and support the child’s progress across multiple settings. For more information, read our blog on speech therapy.

7. Could my child’s delay be due to parenting?

Developmental delays are not caused by "bad parenting."

Children develop at different rates due to a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. What matters most is identifying delays early and taking steps to support your child through professional therapy.

As a leading special needs learning centre, we work in partnership with parents to make data-informed decisions and continuously refine your child’s therapy plan.

8. Will my child “catch up” or become “normal”?

Every child learns and grows in their own way.

At The Learning Curve, we
don’t define progress based on being “normal.” Our focus is on helping each child gain meaningful skills that promote independence, communication, and quality of life, whatever that may look like for them.

We work with families to honour each child’s unique path, providing them with
access to tools and strategies that enhance daily functioning.

9. Can I stop my child from stimming?

Stimming (self-stimulatory behaviour like rocking or hand-flapping) is often a coping mechanism, especially for children with autism.

At TLC, we approach stimming with compassion. We only address it if:

  • It is self-injurious

  • It disrupts the child’s ability to participate in learning

  • It affects daily functioning significantly

When needed, our ABA therapists identify the purpose behind the behavior and teach more functional alternatives, always with your child’s comfort and emotional regulation in mind.

10. Will my child have to do ABA therapy forever?

Not necessarily. ABA therapy at The Learning Curve is goal-based and tailored to your child’s specific developmental needs–it is not designed to continue indefinitely.

Every child progresses at their own pace, and the duration of therapy depends on their learning goals, the intensity of support needed, and how consistently therapy is implemented across settings (including at home).

Some families start ABA therapy to build foundational skills—such as communication, attention, or following instructions—and gradually reduce therapy as their child becomes more independent. Others may choose to continue support long-term if ongoing help is needed for behavioural regulation, self-care, or academic readiness.

What’s important to know is:

  • Therapy is not lifelong by default.

  • Our aim is always to fade support responsibly, based on your child’s progress.

  • Through parent training and home strategies, we also help caregivers reinforce learning, enabling children to succeed beyond the therapy environment.

11. How do I choose the right autism centre in KL?

Choosing the right autism centre in KL can feel overwhelming, but here are a few key things to consider:

  • Therapy Approach: What type of intervention does the centre provide? For example, The Learning Curve offers Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) exclusively. Be cautious of centres that claim to offer “everything” without clearly defined methods or trained personnel.

  • Credentials & Experience: Look for centres with certified professionals, such as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) or Malaysia Certified Behavior Analysts (MCBAs). Ask who will be working with your child and what their qualifications are.

  • One-to-One vs Group Therapy: Some children benefit most from structured, individualised support. At The Learning Curve, all sessions are delivered one-on-one, allowing for greater personalisation.

  • Clarity of Scope: Make sure the centre is transparent about what they do, and what they don’t do. For instance, TLC does not provide speech therapy, occupational therapy, or medical diagnoses; however, we’re happy to refer you to trusted professionals for these needs.

  • Parent Communication: A quality centre will offer regular progress updates, assessments, and be open to discussing your child’s development. At TLC, we ensure consistent communication between our team and parents at every step.

Choosing the right centre is about finding a team that aligns with your child’s needs, your family’s values, and a therapy approach backed by science.

12. What licenses or qualifications should an autism centre in KL have?

In Malaysia, while there is no single national license for autism centres, there are several important professional credentials and regulatory expectations that parents should look out for:

  • BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst): This is an internationally recognised certification in ABA. Centres offering ABA should have BCBAs or BCBA-supervised staff.

  • MCBA (Malaysia Certified Behavior Analyst): A locally recognised certification for behaviour analysts practising in Malaysia.

  • ABAT (Applied Behaviour Analysis Technician): Technicians working directly with children should be formally trained and certified under ABA standards.

  • Company Registration & Operating Legitimacy: Always check that the centre is legally registered in Malaysia and operates from a safe, child-appropriate facility.

  • Transparency About Scope: Reputable centres will clearly state what they can and cannot provide.

Choosing a centre with well-documented certifications and clear service boundaries helps ensure that your child receives ethical, high-quality support based on international standards of care.
